Court hands down 3-year sentence to first participant in January 13 riots in Riga

Print versionRiga Regional Court has convicted Ivans Mirahtanovs, one of the participants in January 13, 2009 riots in Riga's Old Town, of organizing or participating in a mass riot and sentenced him to three years and one month in prison.

Mirahtanovs has appealed the sentence, therefore he has not been arrested, reports LETA.
Mirahtanovs previously failed to appear in court when the criminal case on January 13, 2009 riots was being reviewed.
The court also ruled that Mirahtanovs would have to pay compensation to two police officers injured during the riots: LVL 200 and LVL 130.
