Latvian Police General Aloizs Blonskis dies at 78

Legendary Police General Aloizs Visvaldis Blonskis (1933-2012) has died in a hospital at the age of 78, the Interior Ministry informed LETA.

Blonskis' career in the police force began in 1953 in Riga. He was head of Jurmala Police Criminal Investigation Department and Ogre District Police Department. From 1969 to 1994, Blonskis was deputy chief of Latvian Criminal Police.

In 1994, Blonskis became chief of Criminal Police Department. In 1997 – he was given the special title of "police general." In 2000, he retired and was bestowed Latvia's highest honor – the Order of the Three Stars (the fourth-category).

Afterwards, Blonskis advised then-State Police Chief Juris Reksna and several interior ministers – Mareks Seglins, Maris Gulbis and Eriks Jekabsons. In 2001, he was elected to the Riga City Council.
