Prime Minister Kubilius meets with U.S. Congress members

Prime Minister of Lithuania Andrius Kubilius has received a delegation from the U.S. Congress. During the meeting, the prime minister noted that Lithuania was actively moving towards energy independence and establishment of a competitive energy market in the region.

According to Kubilius, Lithuania welcomed the interest of U.S. companies to invest in the Lithuanian energy sector and foster more active cooperation.

 

The prime minister presented Lithuania's plans to erect the Visaginas nuclear power plant, the LNG terminal, informed them about the progress of the restructuring of the gas sector, informs LETA/ELTA.

 

The prime minister and the members of the U.S. Congress also exchanged views on the economic and political prospects for Belarus, voiced concern about the lack of democracy and restrictions on human rights in the neighbouring country. Kubilius confirmed Lithuania's determination to cooperate in Euro-Atlantic integration process and security sector.

 

Kubilius thanked the U.S. Congress, particularly congressman Dan Burton, for initiating the joint letter of Congress members to U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. In the letter, the Congress members expressed their concern about the projected nuclear plants in the Kaliningrad region and Astravets, as well as the insufficiently clear stand of the United States with regard to the said plants.
