The Riga Regional Court on December 1st decided to start court debates in the criminal case against Ventspils Mayor Aivars Lembergs (For Latvia and Ventspils), informs LETA.

The court turned down all requests voiced by Lembergs' attorneys and decided that debates would now begin. The next hearing will be on February 5, 2018.

The debates will be one of the final stages in the review of the case. If new information is provided to the court during the debates, the court may order investigation in the case reopened.

As reported, the prosecutor's office has charged Lembergs with bribe-taking, money laundering, document forgery, exceeding his authority, and other crimes.

The other defendants in the case are Lembergs' son Anrijs Lembergs and Ansis Sormulis who works at various transit companies. All three defendants plead not guilty.

The case was handed over to the court by the prosecutor's office in 2008. The judges on the case are Boriss Geimans, Irina Jansone and Ligita Kuzmane.
