538 inmates of Alytus Correction House, or nearly half of the inmates, refuse to accept food provided by the penal institution. 135 are taking part in the strike in Kybartai Correction House, 406 in Marijampole Correction House, 26 women in Panevezys Correction House, 392 inmates in Pravieniskes Correction House-Open Prison Colony, 186 in Vilnius Correction House, 20 in Kaunas Remand Prison, 64 in Lukiskes Remand Prison-Closed Prison, 68 in Siauliai Remand Prison and 9 in the Central Prison Hospital.
The Prison Department has noted that inmates purchase food products in shops of penal institutions and cook their own food.
Having assessed the reduction in demand for food, penal institutions started cooking fewer portions, only for those who are not on strike. On Tuesday excess portions were distributed to various social institutions – homes for the elderly, special schools for children and hostels for the homeless.
As reported, inmates of Lithuania's penal institutions have announced a strike and refuse to accept food due to the changes to the Penal Code.
