The Latvian Investment and Development Agency (LIDA) is currently working on attracting two large-scale industrial projects to Latvia.

As the LIDA Director Andris Ozols said in an interview on the Latvian State Radio this morning, LIDA hopes that Latvia will manage to attract at least one of the projects. One of these two projects foresees opening a Coca Cola production plant in Latvia.

As the Estonian daily newspaper Aripaev reported, Coca-Cola Hellenic Bottling Co., the world's second-largest bottler of Coke beverages, may relocate its Estonian bottling plant to Latvia.

The company has chosen Latvia as the best location for a Baltic plant and picked a plot near Ropazi, 40 kilometers east of capital Latvia, as a future site. The final decision on the relocation is due to be made within 12 months.

Ozols admitted that due to the financial crisis, it is much more difficult now for businessmen to take out loans in banks, which also has an effect on the number of new project applications submitted to LIDA. As Ozols explained, getting a loan in a bank is the most complicated for companies owned by local businessmen.
