First organic baby food production facility to open in Latvian Adazi

BC, Riga, 10.10.2014.Print version
The first organic baby food production facility in the Baltic countries will have its opening ceremony in Adazi on Friday, October 10, as Lat Eko Food representative Liene Grabe told the Nozare.lv business portal, reports LETA.

The new plant, "Rudolfs", will be capable of processing all certified organic fruit and vegetables grown in Latvia, and provide Latvian babies with quality organic food made in Latvia.

The opening ceremony will take place at 2 p.m.

The project has been implemented with the help of European Union's structural funds and co-financing provided by Vilis Vitols Senior and Vilis Vitols Junior – a total of about EUR 4 million has been invested in the project.

"This will remove a major obstacle to Latvian organic fruit and vegetable producers who wish to sell what they grow, and they will not have to sell their products for less than it costs to grow them – which is what they had to do until now. Furthermore, the added value created during the processing stage will stay in Latvia, not in some other country," said the Organic Farming Association's head Gustavs Norkarklis. "Latvian organic farmers will finally be able to export products with high added value," he added.

The company's daily output will be around five tons of quality baby food. Around 80% of the company's products will be exported. The new facility meets all the EU requirements on baby food and organic food production, and is in line with the latest scientific achievements.

Lat Eko Food CEO Egija Martinsone is very pleased that in just four years since the company was established it has grown from a small niche producer into a major production business, which already exports purees to Kuwait, Korea, Great Britain, and will enter many other markets already in the near future. She praises the company's cooperation with Latvian scientific institutions and the professionals who work there, and emphasizes that the products the company makes have excellent taste properties and no harmful additives.
