Nelja Energia opens the first wind energy park financed from selling pollution quota

BC, Tallinn, 15.05.2014.Print version
Estonian wind energy company Nelja Energia opened on Wednesday the 6.9 MW Ojaküla wind energy park in the Viru Nigula parish, which was financed from the sales proceeds of pollution quota by Estonia to Spain, LETA/Postimees Online reports.

More than half the cost of the project was granted by the Environmental Investments Centre (EIC) green investment plan, the objective of which is to invest the funds received from the sale of the quota into improving the environment in Estonia.

AS Nelja Energia Chairman of the Board Martin Kruus said that Ojaküla wind farm cost nearly 10 million euros, but renewable energy fee paid by consumers of electric energy was not used for it.

"Ojaküla wind farm is 52% funded from pollution quota export revenue, which proves that it is possible to build wind farms without the renewable energy support," explained Kruus.

EIC board member Lauri Tammiste stated that this is the first wind farm in Estonia that was built with the support of CO2 quota sales revenues.

Ojaküla wind farm will produce approximately 20 GWh of electricity per year, which is four times more than the town of Kunda households need. Each wind turbine has a nominal capacity of 2.3 MW and the wind farm together has the capacity of 6.9 MW farm.
