On September 12, 2013, the Board of Lithuanian company Litgrid gave the go-ahead for concluding a contract for the purchase of reconstruction works of the 330 kV switchyard of the Alytus transformer substation with A.Zilinskio ir Ko UAB; the contract will be signed with the contractor within expiry of the 15 days term for postponement of the signing of the contract, Lithuanian company Litgrid said in a statement, LETA cites.

Under the contract, which is valued at 43.5 million litas including VAT (the value-added tax), the contractor will have to carry out all works necessary for the proper operation of the reconstructed and expanded Alytus switchyard.

The contractor will also have to draft the project of works, prepare equipment necessary for the reconstruction and arrange construction works provided for in the technical project. The reconstruction works of the switchyard will have to be carried out in 20 months following the conclusion of the contract.

The international public procurement of the reconstruction works of the Alytus switchyard started in March 2013. A total of three companies took part in the process.

Following the reconstruction of the 330 kV switchyard at the Alytus transformer substation, it will be connected with two new 330 kV electricity transmission lines stretching to the HVDC back-to-back converter station and Kruonis pumped storage hydroelectric plant. The switchyard will operate together with the HVDC back-to-back converter station and the 400 kV switchyard, which will be designed and constructed by ABB. The contract with ABB was signed in February 2013.

The Alytus transformer substation, which is undergoing a complex reconstruction, will be renewed by the end of 2015, when the Lithuanian electricity system will be connected with LitPol Link, a power link with Poland.

The 110 kV switchyard of the Alytus substation is currently undergoing reconstruction. The reconstruction works of the 330 kV switchyard will start in October 2013 and the construction of the 400 kV switchyard and the HVDC back-to-back converter station in Alytus will begin in spring of 2014.
