"Finally, Vilnius will be closer to Klaipeda and Klaipeda will be closer to Vilnius. By this project, we will become an important part of the port," said Vilnius City Mayor Arturas Zuokas during the ceremony of burying the capsule.

The new terminal will be used to transfer goods and shipments from one type of transport to another, namely from trains to trucks and the other way back. The terminal will be used to store containers, transport vehicles, to rent containers to export your produce or to divide it into shipments and send those to the nearby cities or supermarkets.

Though currently only 25 percent of containers are carried by rail from the port, after building the intermodal terminal this number will significantly increase.

It is planned that it will take 17 months to complete the construction of Vilnius intermodal terminal.

51 percent of the VLC shares belong to Vilnius City Municipality, while the rest stake is owned by Lithuanian Railways.
