While neighbouring countries experienced decrease in freight transportation, company Lithuania Railways (Lietuvos gelezinkeliai) maintained a stable flow of freight during the first five months in 2013. During the first five month of 2012 more than 1.9 million passengers were carried by train, that is 4.5% more year-on-year, reports LETA/ELTA.

The company carried more than 19.7 million tones of freight, year-on year it increased by 1.1%. Meanwhile, local rail freight transportation during the given period has increased by 28.5%, altogether there were transported 6 million tonnes of freight.

According to Stasys Gudvalis, Director of the Freight Transportation Directorate at Lithuanian Railways, the period from January to April was not easy for the neighbouring countries: freight transportation fell by 14.5% in Belarus, by 3% in Russia, by about 11% in Latvia and Estonia, by 9% in Ukraine and be 14% in Kazakhstan.

According to Gudvalis, Lithuanian Railways maintained the stable freight flow only due to major efforts. However, he said that the unfavourable trend of freight transportation might reduce the revenues of the company.

"We have stabilized the decrease in freight that started at the beginning of the year by working successfully with local clients, yet we are concerned about the current decrease in international transportation which might affect the planned revenues of the company", said Gudvalis.

During the first five month of 2012 more than 1.9 million passengers were carried by train, that is 4.5% more year-on-year, company Lithuanian Railways said.

According to the representatives of the company, the increased flow of passengers was determined by the train travel promotion measures.

"Implementation of the loyalty programme for passengers, discounts and various campaigns are producing encouraging results, people travel by trains more frequently. We aim at improving our services and hope for a further passenger growth", said Dalijus Zebrauskas Deputy Director of the passenger transportation directorate at Lithuanian Railways.

According to the data by Lithuanian Railways, during May more than 422,000 passengers travelled by train, that is 4.7% more compared to the number of passengers in May 2012.
