A railway line in Western Lithuania Klaipeda-Pagegiai which is highly important to the Lithuanian economy will be modernized using the European Union (EU) funds.

It is planned that four line segments with a total length of 33.5 kilometres will be renewed in two years, reports LETA/ELTA.

The decree of Lithuanian Minister of Transport and Communication Eligijus Masiulis allocated nearly LTL 70 million (EUR 20.3 million) to the project out of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). The total project cost is LTL 99 million (EUR 29 million).

The Ministry of Transport and Communication informs that the reconstruction work will take place in the four sections of the railway line that are in the worst condition. The railway tracks will be cleaned up, tracks and crossings will be upgraded, signals reconstructed and the passenger platform of Vilkyciu station will be renewed.

According to experts, some sections of Klaipeda-Pagegiai line before the reconstruction were in a critical condition. Trains had to go around twice slower than they actually could, therefore the permeability of the railway was decreasing.
