Cargo turnover at Latvian ports increased by 22.6% in Q1

In the first three months of 2012, 20 million tons of cargo were handled at Latvian ports, a 22.6% increase on the respective period in 2011, according to the Transport Ministry's data.

The Freeport of Riga handled 9.5 million tons of cargo, 23.6% more than in the first quarter of 2011. The Freeport of Ventspils handled 9.3 million tons (a 30.7% increase), the Port of Liepaja – 1.7 million tons (a 42.9% increase), writes LETA.
Bulk cargo made up the largest part of the cargo turnover at Latvian ports in the first three months of the year – 9.5 million tons (a 29.4% increase); followed by liquid cargo – 7.4 million tons (a 20.2% increase), and general cargo – 3.1 million tons (a 10.1% increase).
88,250 TEU containers were handled in the first quarter of 2012, 31.5% more than in the corresponding period in 2011.
