March 28-29, Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics and a delegation of Latvian businessmen continued their visit to Japan, urging Japanese businessmen to take advantage of Latvia's business environment, LETA was informed by the Foreign Ministry's press and information department.

The Latvian delegation had a meeting with top executives of the world-famous corporations Hitachi and Mitsubishi, as well as with representatives from the Association of Japan Corporate Executives. Given the successful Latvian-Japanese cooperation in carbon dioxide quota trading to date, the minister offered to continue it.

The Latvian delegation also met with International Friendship Exchange Council members, Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) President Hiroyuki Ishige, Japan Lumber Importers Association representatives, as well as Nissin Corporation President Mashiro Tsutsui.

During the talks, Latvian entrepreneurs, representing Baltic Container Terminal, Latvijas Dzelzcels, the Freeport of Ventspils and Riga Wood Japan, presented what they provide and offer. The sides also discussed specific cooperation possibilities. Rinkevics invited Japanese businessmen to establish their production facilities in Latvia and take advantage of the country's unique geographic location and infrastructure, enabling deliveries and logistics to Europe, Russia and Central Asia.

“Latvia’s ice-free ports, vast railway infrastructure, high quality logistics services, as well as good contacts with partners in Russia and other eastern neighborhood countries, allows Latvia to offer attractive cooperation opportunities to its Japanese partners. The use of Latvian ports to transport NATO goods to Afghanistan is the best proof of our transit sector's potential,” emphasized Rinkevics.

The minister informed about Latvia’s intention to take part in the New Silk Road Project which would ensure cargo transportation not only to Afghanistan and the Central Asian countries, but also in the opposite direction. The Japanese side acknowledged Latvia’s potential and experience in transit and promised to consider the delegation's offers. Rinkevics invited Japanese entrepreneurs to take part in a business seminar that will be organized by the Latvian Investment and Development Agency and its partner organization, JETRO, in Latvia this September.

As part of the visit, the delegation met with representatives from the Latvia-Japan parliamentary cooperation group in the Parliament of Japan. Japanese officials commended Latvia for its ability to successfully overcome economic difficulties. The parties agreed to strengthen Latvian-Japanese relations not only in economy, but also in education, research and culture.
