The Estonia-based oil shale processing giant Viru Keemia Grupp (VKG) and Estonian energy enterprise Eesti Energia plan to start producing diesel fuel from shale oil, reports Estonian news service BBN referring to Postimees.

According to Priit Rohumaa, the Chairman of VKG, said that the company has already started to prepare the project, writes LETA.

"We will start construction next year and the refinery should become operational in 2015, reaching full capacity in 2016," Rohumaa stated.

VKG says that it plans to produce up to 400,000 tons of diesel fuel a year that equals two-thirds of Estonia's annual consumption of diesel fuel.

Since also Eesti Energia plans to build a diesel fuel refinery and start producing diesel fuel from 2016, Estonia's own need for diesel fuel could soon be met from own production.

Eesti Energia’s representatives say that starting from 2016, the company will be producing 1.2 million tons of high-quality diesel fuel and petrol a year.

As reported, Eesti Energia also mulls participation in Serbia's planned oil-shale project.
