Lithuanian energy company Lietuvos Energija presented a new trademark "Green Lithuanian energy" on March 22, 2012, which will be used to identify electric energy, generated from renewable sources, the company said in a statement.

This electricity will be generated by Kaunas Hydroelectric Power Plant and supplied to retail customers, implementing social responsibility programs, by Energijos Tiekimas, reports LETA/ELTA.

The first agreements on supply of certified green Lithuanian electric energy were signed today – on March 22 with Gargzdai-based pet food manufacturer Mars Lietuva and natural mineral water producer Druskininkiu Rasa.

The company's subsidiary Energijos Tiekimas UAB will present the new product on the retail market.

A survey carried out at the end of last year by the largest independent Lithuanian-controlled electric energy supplier Energijos Tiekimas showed that of 500 surveyed Lithuanian companies as much as 72 percent were especially concerned about the issues of environmental protection and ecology in their everyday operations. Most of the surveyed companies said they would consider the possibility of buying electric energy generated from renewable sources and a fifth of them would agree to pay a higher price for such electric energy.

Green Lithuanian energy is generated by Company-controlled Kaunas Hydroelectric Power Plant (KHPP).

Last year more than a third or 385.8 million kWh (0.38 TWh) of the total electric energy produced from renewable sources in Lithuania was generated by KHPP.

A total of 1097 million kWh (1.09 TWh) of green electric energy was generated in Lithuania in 2011. KHPP met four percent of Lithuania's electric energy needs. It is estimated that this amount is able to meet the annual electricity needs of Kaunas city and region and Siauliai city.

Two companies, Mars Lietuva and Druskininkiu Rasa, that showed the keenest desire to promote the use of green energy in Lithuania were offered by Energijos Tiekimas to be supplied with 100 percent of their energy needs.
