The first stage of pan-Estonian fast Internet network EstWin was launched on Wednesday in Antsla parish in South West Estonia, LETA/Äripäev.ee reports.

Estonian Broadband Development Foundation manager Olav Harjo said that in addition to Antsla, operators can already connect homes and companies to fast internet in several other Võrumaa parishes, Järvamaa and Lääne-Virumaa counties.

Economy and Communications minister Juhan Parts said that he is glad that EstWin that was initiated two years ago has yielded first real results. “This project had provided work already for dozens of companies and hundreds of people – surveyors, designers, builders and many others. But this is just the beginning, the big work is still ahead. Nearly 6,000 km of network still has to be built,” said Parts.

EstWin is the largest public and private sector partnership project in Estonia ever. It aims to build a new generation broadband network by 2015. According to the plan, a connection point with the network should not be further away from any Estonian household than 1.5 km, meaning that all households, companies and institutions can join the network that enables data speed of 100 Mbit/s.

By the end of this year, 1,200 km and by the end of 2012, 2,500 km of fibre-optical cable netwok should be completed. The total aim is to build 6,500 km of fibre-optical cable in Estonia.
