Vilnius Municipality and AB Lietuvos Gelezinkeliai agreed to develop the Logistics Park (Logistikos Parkas), a part of the future Logistics Centre in Vilnius.

The construction of the centre is expected to begin in 2012, the object is worth around 100 million litas (29 million euros), 84 million litas (24.3 million euros) of which will be covered by the European Union's structural funds.

On Friday Vilnius Mayor Arturas Zuokas and Director General of Lietuvos Gelezinkeliai Stasys Dailydka signed an establishment agreement of the Vilnius Logistics Park. According to Transport Minister Eligijus Masiulis, who also attended the ceremony, Vilnius is expected to have one of a kind land-based container terminal in the Eastern and Central Europe by 2014. The terminal will make intermodal transportation significantly more efficient, writes LETA/ELTA.

"Both the intermodal terminal and the Logistics Centre established together will allow creating the common concept of a kind of "land port" and will reduce the constantly growing load of Klaipeda Sea Port, as well as will broaden its service range. This way Lithuania will see its competitive position as a logistics state improving," Masiulis said. Vilnius Mayor Arturas Zuokas says the Park will be located on a spacious 31 hectares land close to the village of Pagiriai and Vaidotu railway station.

It will not only divert on the flow of heavy duty vehicles from the city centre but will also bring over 3 million litas (0.87 million euros) revenue a year to the budget of Vilnius City Municipality.
