"As soon as the ice left the port of Sventoji, works started moving immediately", said Airida Cesniene, Director for Sventoji Port in Klaipeda State Seaport Authority.

The tender winner – Latvian company BGS – has been treating Sventoji port entrance channel for some time. The plan is to dig more than 66,000 cubic meters of soil. It will not be shipped to the sea, but will left to form the future port areas instead, writes LETA/ELTA.

In order to receive vessels, Sventoji port will have to spend 1.3 million litas on treatment works.

The shipping channel was last deepened by an excavator about 15 years ago.

Another 2.6 million litas will go to renovation of quays and installation of floating docks to moor about 60 boats. These works are carried out by the tender winner – Hidrostatyba company. It is a little behind work schedule though.

"As the season approaches, the residents of Sventoji are getting particularly interested in how the port will actually function. We want it to be alive in summer. Klaipeda State Seaport Authority has already drafted a project for a bicycle rental and trading activity contract. Traders will be allowed to engage in their activities after they install temporary trade areas. Those companies that will offer the highest rates will be allowed to engage in this activity", explained Cesniene.

The port undergoes a parallel preparation for the grand reconstruction, which will start in 2013. A tender has been recently held for drafting the detailed plan of the port territory. Of the six participants in the tender, the company Sweco Lietuva offered the lowest price – 107,569 litas.
