Lithuanian telco TEO has added Facebook, Flickr and RSS feeds to its IPTV service Interactive GALA, enabling subscribers to access their social network, share and view photos and read the latest news headlines on their TV screen, IPTV news reports.

TEO had reached 131,200 subscribers for its TV services (delivered via IPTV and DTT) by the end of 2010, having added a modest 28,800 customers during the 12-month period. According to data from Informa Telecoms & Media (publisher of IPTV News), the service launched in October 2006 and had an estimated 58,100 subscribers by March 2010, writes LETA/ELTA.

Although IPTV operators continue to add social networking and other interactive capabilities to their offerings, there have been a number of doubts expressed recently over whether the majority of consumers really wish to engage in "lean-forward" activities on their television: a wide-ranging survey from Accenture revealed on April 13 that while catch-up TV remains consumers' favourite Internet TV feature, only 14% of those polled wished to surf the Web on their televisions and only 11% currently desire interactive and social networking functionality.
