Lithuania to boast air transport volume in summer 2011

Danuta Pavilenene, BC, Vilnius, 28.03.2011.Print version
The access to Lithuania by air will be the most significant over the 21 years of Independence in the summer of 2011. All the three international airports of Lithuania – in Vilnius, Kaunas and Palanga – will provide more passenger seats than in the best – 'pre-crisis' year 2008, the Transport Ministry of Lithuania reports.

Regular flights at the Vilnius International Airport will be provided this July with almost as many passenger seats as in 2008 – approximately 200,000. Decreased supply was determined by the considerably shrunken market of charter flights. However, currently it is about to increase as well, informs LETA/ELTA.

Fifteen airlines will carry passengers from Vilnius by regular flights. None of these airlines will be a dominant one, which will enable the airport to divide risks and the competition will be useful for passengers.

Regarding the amount of proposed passenger seats, the largest carrier in Lithuanian hubs will still remain Latvian national airline airBaltic, which provides approximately 35,000 passenger seats monthly. A little bit less passenger seats will be provided by Ryanair and Wizz Air (each providing more than 30,000 passenger seats monthly).

General amount of passenger seats proposed by the three Lufthansa group airlines – Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines and Brussels Airlines – will provide a number of seats exceeding 25,000.

However, according to the amounts of transported passengers, it will hardly be easy for the airBaltic to remain the largest carrier in Vilnius Airport, as the largest amounts of seats are proposed for Riga destination. Planes flying in this destination are less filled than those of low-cost carriers' planes flying to destinations in the West and South Europe.

Whereas the record will be reached according to the general amount of passenger seats with destination to all the three Lithuania's international airports – Vilnius, Kaunas and Palanga, the total amount of 330,000 passenger seats will be provided in this summer.
