New interactive social network MyHistro launched by Estonians

Juhan Tere, BC, Tallinn, 12.01.2011.Print version
Estonian entrepreneur Jaanus Vihand recently launched a social network – MyHistro, which is expected to be more private, in-depth and, according to Vihand, less "tabloid-like" than the popular social sites, LETA reports, referring to TestMarket.eu.

MyHistro, developed by the Webmedia team, is a unique environment which allows to chat and share stories with friends, with a timeline and a map for better orientation.

A user can easily upload a story of his or her last trip along with a small text entry and pictures for each destination, or, for instance, a story about personal athletic career.

The result is unique, interactive and entertaining but will certainly need some getting used to and may be hard to follow at first.

Vihand has thus far been known as the developer of the history environment Histrodamus. The work on Histrodamus is making quiet and steady progress and it has already won an award in popular science category. As Vihand says, the main effort has gone into developing the social media enhancements of Histrodamus, one of which is intended to be MyHistro.

MyHistro is meant for people who are already users of Facebook, Twitter, MySpace or some other social media tool. Vihand notes that MyHistro is not meant to replace any of them but rather to supplement them.

"MyHistro is essentially different from the rest," says Vihand. "If Facebook and Twitter are like a newspaper, MyHistro is more of a magazine or even a book – it has a slightly smaller number of users but is more comprehensive and hopefully less tabloid-like. That is why its contents do not lose value over time and users have reason to come back to view it again and again.“

"MyHistro can also be described as a mix of a blog and Facebook," points out the creator of the site. "It allows every user to go a few steps 'deeper' than today's 'traditional' social networking permits."

MyHistro is aimed at English-language users. For more demanding social media users, the new site offers quite a few new options. For instance, every story in MyHistro has an

"I was here too" function that allows an author's friends to take part in the stories as well.

The MyHistro beta is public. It has already won a good share of attention on the web. The number of testers is limited but Vihand is looking for feedback so that the environment could be perfected by the official launch in January 2011.

As for the stiff competition in the social media field, Vihand is self-confident: "We do not have hundreds of other competitors. Facebook is not our competitor. MySpace is not our competitor. Bebo, Badoo, Hi5, Tagged, Odnoklassniki, Orkut etc are not our competitors either, and neither are the hundreds of other social media environments. MyHistro is different from them all and is meant to supplement existing environments. It is much like how a DVD player complements a TV at home. At least for now, MyHistro is still fairly unique. We have not found another social network with a similar basic function – map + timeline + story creator."
