Vilnius Airport on Monday called a contractor tender for the construction of the departure terminal in the northern part of the airport. The new terminal will be wedged between the existing one and the VIP terminal with a conference center which is now under construction, informed LETA/BNS.

Dainius Ciuplys, head of Vilnius Airport, says the construction of the new terminal is one of the stages of the airport's reconstruction.

"Vilnius Airport has already reached its capacity limit as we are serving more and more passengers with every year, therefore, expansion is necessary and is very important. The new terminal will expand the airport's operations and technological capabilities," Ciuplys said.

The contractor will be picked by the middle of 2020, and the terminal will be built by the second half of 2022, Lietuvos Oro Uostai (Lithuanian Airports), the airport operator in Lithuania, says.

Once the terminal of 14,400 square meters is built, the airport's total passenger terminal area will grow by a third, and the passenger capacity will double from 1,200 to 2,400 passengers per hour, the airports operator said, adding that the exact value of the planned investment will be known after the tender.
