The LMT head indicated that unlike classic television, the smart TV service will be a new standard providing an extensive content choice to each user who will be able to create personalized blocks of applications and TV channels.
LMT intends to make the smart TV service called LMT Majas Televizija (LMT Home TV) available to its home Internet subscribers in the 4G network in the second half of this year. LMT is set to start testing the new service in a month.
"If the test is completed successfully, we will start selling the [smart] television in the second half of the year," said LMT vice-president for marketing and business development Ingmars Pukis.
The LMT project is being developed in collaboration with Google.
Pukis said that smart TV broadens and changes television's functionality, allowing to combine the content of traditional TV and new media into one TV platform.
"With the help of the high-speed 4G Internet, LMT Majas Televizija provides the opportunity to make Latvian-produced content available in many remote regions of Latvia where it is currently unavailable due to technical limitations," Binde said, adding that this will facilitate the consolidation of Latvia's cultural environment.
The company's representatives did not reveal the size of the investments made in the creation of the new TV service. They said that the creation of the smart TV service had taken two years and that its testing is expected to take half a year.
LMT is the oldest mobile operator in Latvia.
