EU Commission registers Latvian grey peas as Protected Designation of Origin

BC, Riga, 30.10.2015.Print version
The European Commission has registered Latvia's "grey peas" as Protected Designation of Origin, which have joined such Latvian traditional products such as "sklandrausis" (grated carrot and potato tart) and the "Carnikava lampreys" in the Database of Origin and Destination, informs LETA.

Latvia's grey peas (Latvijas lielie pelekie zirni) are dried seeds from a local variety of field pea produced in nearly all of Latvia.

A hearty staple of Christmas eve and New Year's Eve feasts, the peas are soaked overnight, then boiled until ready, mixed with chopped onion and bacon bits and served hot.

The peas are usually washed down with kefir.
