Speaker of Riigikogu Eiki Nestor declared the Village of the Year 2015 title recipient at the Estonian Villages 9th Assembly this weekend, reports LETA, referring to the Riigikogu Press Office.

The 9th Estonian Villages Provincial Assembly (Diet) took place at Särevere in the Järva County during the weekend, and one of the highlights of the event was the announcement of the Village of the Year title, handed over by Speaker of Riigikogu Eiki Nestor.

Nestor also gave the nominee villages from each county a bell with the Riigikogu logo on it.

The title of the Village of the Year went to the Leedri Village on the island of Saaremaa, in the Lääne-Saare parish.

The Estonian Diet, or the Provincial Assembly of Villages is a major event for the Estonian Villages Movement Kodukant (Homestead), a kind of a Parliament of villages, held once in every two years in a different county since 1996.

The event was opened by a speech from President Toomas Hendrik Ilves, who spoke about the importance of enterprising communities where people stand together yet are open and tolerant.
