Senior border official Viljar Kärk stated that the new information system enables to make real-time queries to Estonian as well as international databases, which makes it simpler and faster to check people crossing the border.
Due to the implementation of the new information system, temporary queues can occur on Thursday in border checkpoints.
Ministry of Internal Affairs IT and Development Centre (SMIT) Deputy Director Virgo Riispapp said the new solution increases the Estonian internal security, because with the new system, three times more inquiries are made during the same time into different information systems than before.
The project was co-funded by the European Union through the External Borders Fund.
