The Latvian embassy in Japan today hosted a seminar for Japanese tourism operators about tourism opportunities in Latvia, in particular in the eastern Latgale province, the Latvian Foreign Ministry reported LETA.

The seminar was attended by more than 40 leading Japanese tourism operators and certain press representatives.

Latvian Ambassador to Japan Normans Penke gave a presentation about Latvia, its nature and culture. He said that 2018 would be a good year to visit Latvia because of the traditional Latvian Song and Dance Festival. Moreover, the Republic of Latvia will celebrate its centennial in 2018, and it would be a great opportunity to learn about Latvia’s unique cultural heritage.

A new travel guidebook about the Baltic States in the Japanese language was presented at the seminar. It was written by Sanae Ishiguchi and published by Shoshi Kan Kan Bo. The guidebook was released in Japan on March 18, 2016.

Tourism is one of the sectors with the biggest potential for cooperation between Latvia and Japan. The number of Japanese tourists visiting Latvia is growing steadily. Last year 21,575 tourists from Japan visited Latvia, up by 38.2% from 2014.

The Latvian embassy in Japan is regularly organizing seminars about tourism in Latvia in cooperation with Shigeyoshi Noto, the representative of the Latvian Investment and Development Agency’s Tourism Development Department in Japan.
