Damage sustained by Plavinas during flooding estimated at LVL 0.5 mln

BC, Riga, 22.04.2013.Print version
While the data on damage sustained by Plavinas during the flooding are still being collated, the local government estimates that the flooding may have cost the town a total of LVL 0.5 million, as Plavinas Region Council's deputy head Ainars Arnitis told LETA.

Liquidation of the damage continues today – water is being pumped out of homes' basements and wells, said Arnitis.

Local government leaders and experts are inspecting private properties and municipal institutions today to assess extent of damage and see where extra help is necessary. Many residents have reported to the local government about the damage.

Various streets and roads have also been damaged during the flooding. The approximate amount of losses has not yet been determined, but it is estimated at about LVL 500,000, said Arnitis.

But at the same time, the town is now past the greatest danger, and even if the water level in the Daugava River increases again this spring, it will no longer pose any threat to the town, said Arnitis.
