Swedbank: Scandinavian banks in Latvia stabilize economy

The presence of Scandinavian banks in Latvia should be viewed as a positive and stabilizing factor for the Latvian economy, as told Swedbank Latvia board member Toms Silins.

Just as other banks in Latvia, Swedbank approves of the government's decision to take Parex banka over, reports LETA.

Banking services in the modern world is a daily necessity, Silins points out.

"We see that the number of our bank's clients is increasing, as does customer activity. For instance, the amount of time deposits has increased 22% since the beginning of the year, and the number of new clients by 81,000. Relations with customers has always been one of our strongest points; independent surveys show that our clients are the happiest clients in the banking sector," Silins stressed.

There is a number of objective reasons to consider Swedbank the best enterprise in the Latvian banking sector – it is first in terms of resources, customers' opinion and other criteria: an extensive network of branches and settlement groups, it has the best Internet bank and the largest number of customers, a good reputation established many years ago, best financial indexes in Latvia and also at the European scale, Silins added.

As reported, yesterday evening Finance Minister Atis Slakteris (People's Party), Latvian Mortgage and Land Bank (Latvijas Hipoteku un zemes banka, Mortgage Bank) President Inesis Feiferis and Parex banka co-owners Valerijs Kargins and Viktors Krasovickis signed an agreement on the acquisition of a 51% interest in Parex banka by the Mortgage Bank.
