Plavins and coach Birzulis to receive LVL 4,000 each from Riga City Council

In addition to a cash bonus from the state for winning the bronze medal at the Olympics, Latvian beach volleyball player Martins Plavins and coach Aigars Birzulis will also each receive LVL 4,000 from the Riga City Council.

According to the Cabinet of Ministers' regulations, athletes who win bronze medals in Olympic Games' individual competitions are entitled to an LVL 36,000 (after tax) bonus, while team those who win bronze in team sports are entitled to LVL 108,000, writes LETA.

 

Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis, who personally congratulated Plavins and his teammate Janis Smedins in London yesterday, has already written in his ''Twitter'' account that the bronze medal won by Plavins/Smedins will be ''valued accordingly''.


As reported, Latvian beach volleyball pair Martins Plavins and Janis Smedins made a thrilling comeback after losing the first set to beat 5th seeded Reinder Nummerdor and Richard Schuil of the Netherlands in the bronze medal match at the London Olympics last night.

 

Plavins/Smedins, who were the Olympic tournament's 17th seed, defeated Nummerdor/Schuil 2-1 (19:21, 21:19, 15:11).
