Ergo Kindlustus: volcanic ashes prompted people to buy travel insurance policies

The insurance company Ergo Kindlustus reported on Tuesday that in July the number of notices on damages from travel insurance policy holders grew by three times in the year-on-year comparison, writes LETA/Delfi.ee.

The growth in the number of notices on damages incurred related to travel is, according to the insurance company, mostly due to the fact that people have become more knowledgeable about the risks and after the chaos in the aviation sector caused by the volcanic ashes in April 2010 have begun buying travel insurance policies more often.

“The number of sold insurance policies in July has grown by approximately 60% in comparison to the month of July last year,” stated the head of the personal insurance department of Ergo Kindlustus Annika Mällo. “Lately, the travel problems caused by the volcanic ashes have been a good lesson to many,” she added.

In July, Ergo Kindlustus registered a total of 2,010 cases of damages – by 17% more than during the same month last year. One of the reasons for the increase in the number of damages notices was the tripling of the travel-related damages notices to a total of 256.
