Roberts Zile: Parex banka’s takeover rescued the banking sector of the entire Baltic Sea region

"It was not just about Parex and the Latvian banking system. We and our taxpayers' money saved the entire European financial system," Zile said in an interview with the newspaper "Neatkariga".
Zile informs that he had to participate in rather heated debates in the European Parliament regarding the best ways to tackling the crisis in Eastern and Central Europe, writes LETA.
"Also was present Commissioner Almunia, who a month before that had wisely taught us how to exit the crisis. However, he could not achieve that MEPs do not increase their salaries by 3.7%, which they were entitled to do under the law," Zile said.
"They give us money, but, in fact, this money is only meant for maintenance of the financial system," Zile points out. "To put it bluntly, we are being lent money so we could pay our debts to Swedish banks. That is not aid. That is an injection to keep us alive."
