From the beginning of May 2008, Nordea Bank Lithuania for security reasons will issue only chip-based cards, the bank announced.

According to the bank, migration to chip cards will take place in order of expiration of old credit cards. Customers will get the chip card in renewal process and also all new issued credit cards will be the chip cards.

Chip embedded to the new cards belongs to the latest generation of the chips, which is the most secure one used today. The migration to chip is accompanied by the introduction of PIN at POS (point of sales), so PIN is needed to use also for making purchases and buying services, reports ELTA.

Nordea Bank Lithuania is issuing nine different types of Maestro debit and MasterCard credit cards. At the end of 2007, the bank issued over 81,000 cards.
