If successful, the streetlighting costs in Tartu would fall at least 300,000 euros per year. Currently the enterprise IoT Technologies are testing the pilot project with a couple of dozen lamps that are installed on two streets in Tartu. The lamps have not been in use for long, but calculations indicate that depending on the regime, the volume of energy saved in comparison with the currently used sodium lamps would be up to 80%.
IoT Technologies is a spin-off of Estonian start-up Defendec that has gained fame with the sensor-based border guarding system, which has been used in Estonia for several years already. Now IoT Technologies is attempting to use the same technology in an urban environment and has built LED lamp controllers that make street lamps communicate between themselves and with movement trackers.
