On July 9, the leading nuclear technology research institutions in the Baltic States signed a memorandum of cooperation in Vilnius, LETA was informed by Progresivo tehnologiju instituts (the Institute of Progressive Technologies) representative Agris Auce.

The memorandum envisages developing cooperation among the University of Latvia, the Vilnius University, the Polish National Center for Nuclear Research, the Tallinn University, the University of Tartu, the Visaginas Nuclear Power Plant, the Vilnius Center for Physical Sciences and Technology, company "Hitachi" and its structural units.

Cooperation with other countries' educational, technological and research institutions is very important for Latvia to avoid falling behind in technological development, believes Auce.

Latvia lagging behind in technology, nuclear energy competence, nuclear safety and environmental protection related to nuclear technology and radiation is particularly dangerous, taking into account that the construction of the Visaginas Nuclear Power Plant in the vicinity of Latvia is becoming ever-increasing reality, explains Auce.
