Lithuanian MP suspected of conflict of interest as to new NPP

Petras Vaida, BC, Vilnius, 04.10.2012.Print version
MP Rokas Zilinskas from the Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats (TS-LKD) has applied the ethics watchdogs regarding another MP – Vidmantas Ziemelis, elder of a parliamentary group of the Christian Party, asking to investigate into a possible conflict of interest as to the projected Visaginas nuclear power plant (NPP).

Vidmantas Ziemelis.

MP Zilinskas is asking the Commission for Ethics and Procedures to say if MP Ziemelis, who is actively campaigning against the new NPP, is involved in a conflict of interest because his son owns a business in Russia, reports LETA/ELTA.

"The media talks about MP Ziemelis son Gediminas Ziemelis' business interest in the Russian Federation. It should be noted that Gediminas Ziemelis has an aviation and aviation service business, the development of which is influenced by the Russian Government's decisions. We also know that the Russian Federation is acting against the construction of a new NPP in Lithuania, as it finds Lithuania's energy independence unfavourable. In the light of these facts, one should note MP Ziemelis' exceptional activeness in campaigning against the NPP: his voting and categorical statements at the Seimas and for the media, organising a referendum to disrupt the NPP construction, etc," the application reads.

Meanwhile, MP Ziemelis calls the application "absolutely ridiculous".
