As LETA was informed by the Economy Ministry's Public Relations Department, Latvenergo's council appoints a board for a three-year term. The company's council chairman is Andris Berzins.

Economy Minister Kaspars Gerhards (For Fatherland and Freedom/LNNK) expressed confidence to LETA that Mikelsons is a high-level professional, who is very responsible. ''Mikelsons has proven himself as a capable chairman of Latvenergo, so the decision made by the company's council is natural,'' emphasized the minister.

According to LETA archives, Mikelsons has been the chairman of Latvenergo since March 2000, and was re-elected to this post in 2002 and 2005. Before becoming board chairman at Latvenergo, Mikelsons was the director of Latvija Statoil.
