LITBIOMA: there is enough biomass in Lithuania

Petras Vaida, BC, Vilnius, 23.02.2012.Print version
There will be enough renewable energy resources, including biomass, for a long time in Lithuania, therefore, accusations concerning deforestation are groundless, said President of Lithuanian Biomass Energy Association LITBIOMA Remigijus Lapinskas.

"Lithuanian renewable energy resources are estimated fairly accurately, therefore, a lasting development of this type of energy should not cause any problems," he said at the conference.

Lapinskas said there have been accusations that deforestation cause ecological threats to our country. He thinks such comments should be considered as unfounded, reports LETA/ELTA.

He said that Lithuania is rich with biomass resources and their price should not rise drastically. Growing trade with Belarus and Latvia also influences such a situation. These factors also determine a difference in heating prices – heating energy produced from biomass costs 20 cents, while energy produced from fossil fuels – around 30 cents.

"Will there be a lack of biomass? No, there won't. Is it going to get extremely expensive? No, it is not. Prices are going to increase slowly," Lapinskas summarized the prospects of biomass utilization.
