LNG terminal to be given status of national importance in Lithuania

Petras Vaida, BC, Vilnius, 11.07.2011.Print version
The Government of Lithuania on Wednesday will give the projected liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal the status of national importance. Latvia, meanwhile, said it would support the construction of the Visaginas nuclear power plant only if the LNG terminal was built in Riga.

Lithuanian Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius explains that the nuclear plant and the LNG terminal are two different projects and that Lithuania's plans do not interfere with those of Latvia, writes LETA/ELTA.

"We have said it repeatedly that Latvia may build a regional LNG terminal funded by the EU. We do not aim to have such a terminal and funds, but we think that small terminals may be built in other ports as well, taking into account the global prospects for liquefied gas. As I know it, the Estonians have plans about their own terminal and we also plan to build it for our needs, without any purpose to perform some regional function," Kubilius said after Government meeting Monday.
