On Saturday, May 14, in Tallinn, the Prime Ministers of the three Baltic countries met to discuss regional cooperation in the energy sector and current developments of the Eurozone. The three Prime Ministers discussed the development of the regional LNG terminal project.

Andrius Kubilius, Andrus Ansip and Valdis Dombrovskis. Tallinn, 14.05.2011.

Prime Minister of Latvia V.Dombrovskis repeatedly emphasized the advantages of Latvia’s infrastructure for implementation of an economically justified regional project.

In view of the fact that Lithuania and Estonia are also interested in placement of similar regional LNG terminal, the three Prime Ministers agreed on the need to wait for the feasibility study initiated by all three countries to be able to compare the advantages of the projects and to decide on further progress – possibly, a regional-level feasibility study.  The feasibility study of Latvia, which is currently performed by Latvernergo is expected in June 2011, the feasibility study of Estonia is expected in October 2011 while the date for Lithuania’s feasibility study is still unknown, informed BC Laine Kučinska.

Prime Minister of Lithuania A.Kubilius shortly informed on the forthcoming announcement about the potential investor in the construction of the Visaginas NPP. The Prime Ministers also addressed the issue of the Baltic electricity market and introduction of the Nordpool Spot electricity stock exchange of the Nordic and Baltic countries.

The Prime Ministers also discussed the future of the Eurozone, particularly emphasizing the need to limit inflation in order to meet the Maastricht criteria and introduce the euro also in Latvia and Lithuania in 2014.
