Court upholds custody ruling against Latvenergo power utility vice-president

Riga Regional Court today upheld the Central District Court's June 16 decision to order the Latvenergo power utility vice-president, Aigars Melko, held in custody. The Riga Regional Court today turned down two appeals filed by Melko's defense, the court's spokesman Ilvars Tomsons told LETA.

As reported, Melko and seven other persons were detained by the Corruption Prevention Bureau officers in mid-June on suspicion of large-scale money laundering. Arrested were five top-level Latvenergo managers, who have now been removed from their jobs, and three private individuals.

The Corruption Prevention Bureau claims that avarice and material gain prompted the Latvenergo officials to use their positions in bad faith and operate counter to the company's interests. They secured favorable decisions for certain private enterprises in connection with public purchase and reconstruction projects.

Melko's attorneys Agris Bitans and Varis Klotins later told reporters that Melko had been charged with misuse of power and money laundering.

Besides Melko, now-former Latvenergo President Karlis Mikelsons and business consultant Andrejs Livanovics are also held in custody. The other detainees were later released on their own recognizance.

Mikelsons and Melko were removed from their posts at a Latvenergo extraordinary shareholders meeting on June 22.
