Alla Petrova, BC, Riga, 23.06.2010.Print version
Professionals from outside Latvenergo Group should be appointed as Latvenergo board members because it is no secret that a large part of the company's employees have played important role in the making of one or another decision of the company; if it turns out that any of these decisions has been wrong, the company will have to react accordingly, as the new Latvenergo acting board chairman, Uldis Bariss, told the business portal Nozare.lv.

Uldis Bariss.

The appointment of Latvenergo's board is done by the Economy Ministry, which represents the largest Latvenergo shareholder – the state of Latvia, informs LETA.

As reported, Latvenergo deputy chief Bariss was appointed as acting chairman of the company's board at the Latvenergo extraordinary shareholders meeting this morning, as the Economy Ministry's State Secretary Juris Puce and Minister of Economy Artis Kampars (New Era) told reporters on June 22.

Latvenergo Group's head Karlis Mikelsons and his deputy Aigars Melko were removed from their respective posts.

On the other hand, Arnis Kurgs and Arnis Daugulis will continue as Latvenergo board members. Kampars said that the company would be able to function properly with a board that has just three members, therefore, there will be no haste in finding the right candidates for the two vacancies on Latvenergo's board, said Kampars.

Kampars also said that the Economy Ministry would start to work on an internal control system at Latvenergo, so as to reduce the risk of corruption at the company.

Whereas Puce said that the Economy Ministry had launched a probe into the ministry's actions regarding Latvenergo's procurement tenders from 2006, and it is planned that the probe would be completed by end-July.

An internal audit will also be carried out at Latvenergo.
