Since April 1, 2010 Eesti Energia sells electricity to the Estlink price region of the Nord Pool electricity exchange which is reflected under sales in Estonia and affects the comparison between the periods in question.
Eesti Energia’s electricity sales on the open market amounted to 256 GWh in May while sales to household and corporate customers on the closed market amounted to 312 GWh and sales to distribution network enterprises 101 GWh.
The electricity sales were affected by partial opening of the electricity market in Estonia, the projected growth in the industrial production and the ambient air temperature that was by 0.8 degrees warmer than in May last year.
Electricity sales outside Estonia amounted to 110 GWh in May – by 11.4% less than during the same month in 2009. In the year-on-year comparison, sales in Finland and in Latvia decreased as this part of electricity sales is operated on the Nord Pool Estlink energy exchange. The decline in sales volumes in Latvia and Finland was balanced by the increased electricity sales to Lithuania in connection with the Ignalina nuclear power plant being closed down and the opening of the local electricity market.
Eesti Energia’s average electricity sales price in Estonia on the closed market amounted to 480 kroons per MWh in May, not including the distribution network service prices. The average base electricity price in the Estlink region of Nord Pool during the same period of time was 545 kroons per MWh and in the Finland region of Nord Pool 618 kroons per MWh.
