The drop in consumption was affected by the significantly warmer than average air temperature in May, which last month was four degrees Celsius higher than the long-term average, the transmission system operator Elering said.
Altogether 273 GWh of natural gas passed through the transmission network in May, of which 54.4 GWh was made up of transit through the the pipeline system located in southeastern Estonia. The smallest daily amount of natural gas that reached Estonia was 4.6 GWh, while the largest daily amount was 13.6 GWh.
The reserve capacity of the transmission pipeline was approximately 50 GWh in May, same as in the same month last year.
The average price of natural gas traded on the Lithuanian GET Baltic gas exchange in price area Estonia was 19.03 euros per megawatt-hour, showing a decreased of 1.4%. The average price in May was 19.82 euros per megawatt-hour in Latvia and 19.87 euros per megawatt-hour in Lithuania. The average system price for the Baltic region was 19.85 euros per megawatt-hour. On the Finnish gas exchange Kaasuporssi, comparable price was 21.7 euros per megawatt-hour.
According to Elering's Estfeed data exchange platform, there were altogether 56,150 measuring points across Estonia in May. Of them, 54,800 had a natural gas purchase agreement and 1,350 were buying natural gas as a general service from the network service provider. Agreements were extended and new agreements were signed on approximately 400 occasions and gas sellers were exchanged in approximately 100 consumption points at the beginning of June.
