NordBalt drives electricity prices in Lithuania to record lows

BC, Vilnius, 23.02.2016.Print version
The NordBalt power interconnection between Lithuania and Sweden last week drove electricity prices in Lithuania to record lows as it started operating in a trial mode, the power transmission system operator Litgrid said on February 23rd, informs LETA/BNS.

The average price in Nord Pool Spot's Lithuanian bidding area last week fell to 27.7 euros per megawatt-hour (MWh) – down by 14% week-on-week and down by 33% year-on-year. This was the lowest weekly average price since the power exchange launched operations in Lithuania, it said.

"The market responded to the launch on Feb. 18 of trial operations by the Lithuania-Sweden power interconnection NordBalt, which also had an impact on the direction and volume of electricity flows in the Baltic countries. Following the launch of NordBalt, electricity prices in the Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian bidding areas were the same almost all the time," the operator said in a press release.

Lithuania last week imported 81% of its electricity, with 69% of it coming from the Nordic countries and the rest from third countries. Electricity imports from Belarus plunged by 48% and overall imports from third countries fell by 14%.

The weekly price in the entire Nord Pool system averaged 21 euros per MWh.

Some 77% of the cross-border interconnection capacity between Latvia and Estonia, 41% of that between Lithuania and Latvia, 83% of that between Lithuania and Sweden, 8% of that between Lithuania and Belarus, and 14% of that between Lithuania and Poland was used on Feb. 15 through 21 on average.
