Latvian MFA met with director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency in New York

On September 26th, on the sidelines of the 70th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, the Foreign Minister of Latvia, Edgars Rinkevics, met with Yukiya Amano, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), informed BC the Latvian MFA.

During the meeting, Rinkevics thanked the IAEA Director General for the election of a Latvian representative to the post of IAEA Vice-Chair of the Board of Governors.

 

The foreign minister expressed appreciation for the IAEA’s contribution to peaceful uses of nuclear technologies and pursuit of UN development goals, especially in improvement of cancer care and the program for the eradication the African tsetse fly that transmits trypanosomiasis.

 

The foreign minister and the director general also exchanged views on the development of the Iranian Nuclear Program and the IAEA’s important role in dealing with this question. Rinkevics expressed confidence in the IAEA’s capacity to fully implement the verification measures of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action in Iran.

 

The Latvian foreign minister extended an invitation to Director General Amano to visit Latvia sometime in the future.
