Latvian Education Ministry: there cannot be schools financed by Russia

BC, Riga, 12.06.2014.Print version
No Russian Federation-financed schools can be established in Latvia, as it would be impossible to receive all of the necessary licenses and permits to do so, the Ministry of Education and Science informed LETA, in regard to Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov's proposal about Russian schools in the Baltic States.

Latvia, as a European Union member state, practices its sovereign actions by dealing with such internal matters as education, therefore, it is unlikely that Russia's idea will see fruition, abiding by Latvian rules and regulations, the ministry indicated.

In order to establish an education institution in Latvia, one requires a license, accredited curriculum, and numerous other obligatory prerequisites. It would also be problematic for students to take exams, as they are in the state language.
