Irina Pilvere elected rector of Latvian University of Agriculture

Yesterday, in rector elections at the Latvian University of Agriculture, on the second ballot, the current Dean of the Department of Economy and Social Development, Professor Irina Pilvere, was elected. 116 out of 222 voters of the university's Assembly voted for, informs LETA.

Pilvere was born on March 3, 1956 in the town Auce in southern Latvia, and is married to Juris Pilvers. In 1979 she graduated from the then-called Latvian Academy of Agriculture, specializing in agricultural business economy.

 

She entered master studies and later doctoral program at the Latvian University of Agriculture.

 

Four candidates were nominated for the top position – Professor of Information Technologies Irina Arhipova, pro-rector and professor of the same department, Peteris Rivza, Dean and Professor of Engineering Kaspars Vartukapteinis and Pilvere.

 

On the first ballot, among the four candidates, 63 Assembly members voted for Arhipovs, 158 members were against, Pilvere received 69 votes for and 150 – against, Vartukapteinis received 42 – for, 179 – against, Rivza received 45 for, 176 – against. Five invalid ballot slips were counted.

 

The rector is elected by the university's Assembly, which, according to the Constitution of the university, is comprised of 240 members.
