New education minister: teachers should receive at least LVL 500 in gross wages

BC, Riga, 07.05.2013.Print version
New Latvian Education and Science Minister Vjaceslavs Dombrovskis (Reform Party) believes that teachers should receive at least LVL 500 in gross salaries, as he points in an interview with the LNT morning show "900 sekundes", writes LETA.

Dombrovskis has decided to work on raising teachers' salaries. Nevertheless, the minister remains cautious regarding the chances of education receiving considerable additional funds in the nearest future.

The level of salaries per workload is not the only element of injustice towards teachers, points out Dombrovskis. According to the principle "money follows students", a large share in salaries is determined by the number of students. Rural schools, however, cannot attract more children. Dombrovskis believes that the system could be kept in large cities and other solutions should be sought in rural areas.

Commenting his further actions, Dombrovskis points out that the previously launched reforms will be continued. The minister will also try to improve cooperation with the sector's representatives and seek compromises.
